10. LIFE IS EVERYWHERE

 

We humans habitually draw a sharp line of distinction between organic things and inorganic things, between the animate and the inanimate. We are not looking for a connection, and if we were we would probably still not find any, because of our lack of imagination. But Nature keeps giving us hints. Let’s take the metals as an example. A passenger plane falls out of sky, and two hundred people are dead. The news hits the television channels all over the world and remains the main topic for a day or two, but it soon becomes obvious that this was not the work of terrorists. The interest wanes, nothing much is heard about the disaster for some weeks or months, while the plane debris and the black box are being examined. Eventually, the findings are released. The plane crashed because a part of the wing fell off in flight. The root cause, according to the experts, was metal fatigue. Some television channels would make a short mention of this; because there have been plenty of other crashes and disasters to talk about since, some would not even bother. A few listeners would take notice of it, most will forget about it almost instantly. It was a metal fatigue? So what?

If only we stopped to think about this for a while! If metal can develop a fatigue, could it be really dead? If it were completely inanimate, if it had no life of its own, wouldn’t it just remain the same? Yes, we can understand that it might get rusty, that’s a chemical reaction, oxidisation, whatever, but fatigue? Isn’t it possible that it indeed is alive, though not quite in the same way as we are, that it only possesses a sort of vague consciousness, not a sharp intelligence, mind you, but a low degree of self-awareness, just enough of it to get tired of supporting a part of the wing structure, just enough to say to itself: “Now I’ve had enough of this, constantly acting as some caryatid, that’s it, I’m off!”

A Kabbalist knows that metals are sensitive and that something like this could happen. Naturally, the metal cannot be as sensitive as for instance could be our cat — we cat lovers know that it can take offence over any small matter and let us know about it in no uncertain terms… However, if the proverbial obstinate donkey can sometimes go on strike and refuse to move, why shouldn’t a piece of metal in some axletree do the same? Aren’t its protons and electrons much the same as those we have? Yes, metals must have sensitivity; their protons and their electrons have the same motions as ours have, they are intelligent, they have a will of their own. Life presupposes intelligence; conscience, like energy it is a primary factor in the creation of the Universe.

Something exists that is very hard to describe, let’s call it a “twilight zone”. In the twilight zone, a moment would come when, without the least suspicion on part of mankind, minerals turn into plants. Plants, again in a twilight moment, slide into animals. Animals, when they reach the point, which allows them to gain the power of thinking and of knowing themselves, become human. Such moments, when things slither from one realm into another, can happen because everything on Earth, whether it be an organism or a mineral, has some sort of consciousness. In Theosophy, which is based on the ancient esoteric doctrines of Hinduism and Buddhism, we find essentially the same idea. Here is an excerpt from The Esoteric Buddhism by A. P. Sinnett (left):

Behind the human harvest of the life impulse, there lay the harvest of mere animal forms, as every one realises; behind that, the harvest or growths of mere vegetable forms - for some of these undoubtedly preceded the appearance of the earliest animal life on the planet. Then, before the vegetable organisations, there were mineral organisations — for even a mineral is a product of Nature, an evolution from something behind it, as every imaginable manifestation of Nature must be, until in the vast series of manifestations, the mind travels back to the unmanifested beginning of all things.”

A little further on Sinnett writes this:

It is the spiral character of the progress accomplished by the life impulses that develop the various kingdoms of Nature, which accounts for the gaps now observed in the animated forms which people the earth. The thread of a screw, which is a uniform inclined plane in reality, looks like a succession of steps when examined only along one line parallel to its axis. The spiritual monads, which are coming round the system on the animal level, pass on to other worlds when they have performed their turn of animal incarnation here. By the time they come again, they are ready for human incarnation, and there is no necessity now for the upward development of animal forms into human forms - these are already waiting for their spiritual tenants. But, if we go back far enough, we come to a period at which there were no human forms ready developed on the earth. When spiritual monads, travelling on the earliest or lowest human level, were thus beginning to come round, their onward pressure in a world at that time containing none but animal forms, provoked the improvement of the highest of these into the required form — the much-talked-of missing link.”
 

WHEN DID IT HAPPEN?

This question has never had a shortage of attempted answers, some coming from serious theologians, others from mere cranks. It wasn’t that long ago when the more or less official stance of the Church was that the world was created in 4450 BC, after someone took the pains of adding up the ages of patriarchs and other information to be found in the Bible. The religious fundamentalists and various other fanatics have always been pointing to the text of the book of Genesis and the seven days of creation, without being able or willing to admit the possibility that what is called a ‘day’ in the Bible is simply an aeon. The word aeon in Greek (or olam in Hebrew, also kalpa in Sanskrit) means the same as ‘age’ or ‘generation’, but gradually it acquired the meaning it has now – a non-specific, nevertheless long, period of time, something that cannot be defined, but is close to eternity. Still, there are millions of people around the world always prepared to kill heretic who might try to explain to them that the world was not created in seven days, that the seven days of creation have only a symbolical meaning.

We have been conditioned to accepting the word evolution in terms of biological science, which for the past century and a half has been wedded to the theory of Darwinism. But when a Kabbalist talks about evolution he conceives it as a tool of Creation, and this includes those unguarded moments in the twilight zones, where things of one realm quietly slip into another realm. There is no way for us of finding out when the first plant started to walk and eat. We can only watch in astonishment some plants that can do the nearest thing to crawling, or others that can eat insects, trap animals or even people. But they, as a species, have been doing this for ages, aeons; we cannot tell since when, all we can do is speculate. There are highly intelligent animals that might be on the verge of moving into the realm of humans, only we don’t know about it. Most of us who keep pets (we have always had both dogs and cats in our household) probably have the memory of least one domestic animal in our life that in many ways appeared to be very close to becoming human — “if only he/she could speak..!”

Similarly, we may suspect that there could be some men somewhere who are about to become angels, or whatever the next stage might be of the evolutionary process of us, humans. Only, we can never tell when, or indeed if, this would happen. Some of those who work as carers with other people who are incapacitated or intellectually handicapped, might tell you that when they compare the mental capacity of their clients to that of their domestic pets, sometimes the latter might appear to be on a higher level than it is with the former. It may well be that at least in some cases there could be a certain amount of overlapping between the realms of the humans and the animals, but I don’t believe that it could ever be in any other direction than forward; a soul that has once reached the human level cannot be retarded and move backward, inhabiting a body of an animal. It may though, for various reasons usually connected with what has become to be known as karmic debts, be confided in an inferior body for the duration of one or even more lives, while generally the soul remains on the same level that it has reached before, not dropping any lower.  Perhaps there might be some such cases, particularly where the so-called black magic is somehow involved, but I do not wish to delve in this here.

The theosophists say that when the soul makes such a decision that means living a life in a body of lower quality, it is from its own initiative. According to them, such decisions are being made on the level that is called “causal”, in position where the past life and perhaps even a series of lives, can be overseen. They also say that when an animal soul reaches the human level, at this stage of evolutionary cycle (more than halfway through) it cannot enter a human body “the next time round”. Instead it enters the so-called devachan, a kind of an interval or time-off, which it spends in a state similar to nirvana. It will remain in that state until the new cycle begins, which it will start as a human.

All these are speculations, nevertheless. To mankind the twilight zone is meant to remain a deep mystery.

SYMPATHIES AND ANTIPATHIES

Throughout the whole of creation we run into sympathies and antipathies. The law of attraction governs the world. Just as for instance did the architects and the masons who had built ancient monuments such as the pyramids, or those who built the medieval cathedrals, or as even now do many of the modern architects, except of course those who design shopping centres.

When we look in awe on some of the architectural triumphs, such as the Taj Mahal (right), many of us cannot dismiss the feeling of suddenly becoming aware of the existence of an overall greater universal plan, to the fulfilment of which we, together with the makers of such wonders are working. Not only humans. Somehow the sea creatures that appear quite mindless to us are capable of creating the most beautiful corrals or seashells, fulfilling some purpose that remains unknown to us. All we can see   and admire is that such creations are made in total harmony with the laws of geometry, and that the makers, while fulfilling their own needs for shelter, safety, etc., seem to be working towards some common purpose of a higher order.

In this place I simply cannot resist telling you the following story. A well-known French Kabbalist visited Australia and stayed with us in Brisbane. He expressed the wish to see the corals of the famous Great Barrier Reef near the coast of Queensland, which lies only a few hundred kilometres away from our town. Eliot and I drove with him to Gladstone, from where the nearest genuine coral island, the Lady Elliott, can be accessed by light plane. After a rather hair-raising landing on the tiny island measuring less than a kilometre in either direction, in strong crosswinds and on a very short landing strip, we made our way to the harbour, where we hired a glass bottom boat with skipper. We were about to come aboard, when suddenly our French colleague balked and refused to go any further. When we asked him what the problem was, he told us in his somewhat frail English that “he doesn’t want to get wet.” No amount of persuading would make him change his mind. The winds have subsided, the skies were clear, the skipper looked experienced, the boat was solid, it was paid for and waiting, so in the end the two of us went alone on the excursion.

For about an hour we had floated over the reef, admiring the most beautiful live corals imaginable. Without our noticing, out of nowhere a heavy black cloud suddenly appeared. Before the skipper could get the boat to the harbour only a few hundred metres away, there was not a dry thread on us left. We travelled light and had to hang up our shirts and trousers on the nearby bushes to dry. The French Kabbalist, who took shelter under the roof, greeted us, though to his credit, we didn’t hear any “I told you so…” from him at all. Somehow he knew though that we were going to get wet in such a big way. How he knew, that’s is one of the mysteries one sometimes encounters when mixing up with people around the Kabbalah.

The drenching I took on the Lady Elliott did not take away my enthusiasm and admiration for the tiny creatures that build such beautiful underwater dwellings. Why do they do it? Wouldn’t simple, less colourful corals do just as well? And why do other molluscs build shells, conches and cockles that appear to be in an absolute harmony with the laws of geometry? Do they possess an in-built sense of some common purpose that we are not consciously aware of? A sense of Universal order of things, to which we too contribute, to the best of our abilities, though without knowing much about it at all? Naturally, we would have a choice, as we always do. We could either work in harmony with the plan, or we could work against its grain. If you read this book, you are probably conscious, at least to some degree, of this choice and of its implications, also of the fact that if you decide in seriousness to follow the spiritual path, you need to remain single-minded, but at the same time strive to become familiar with the laws of this world. To discover the role of these laws in life and how they affect you individually, you need to do some meditating.

Every one of us has an aptitude for something. Upon hearing such a strong statement, sometimes it is hard to avoid getting cynical ideas into one’s head. In my case it harks back to the play Streetcar Named Desire by Tennessee Williams, and the lines in which the play’s hero Stanley Kowalski describes the sad case of one of his acquaintances, who couldn’t do anything, except opening beer bottles with his teeth. Then one day he lost a tooth; from that point on he became completely useless and broke down psychologically …

If we leave out the cases of people who are mentally retarded or in some way handicapped, most people could become at least reasonably good at assembling things on a factory line, but may not be able to do much else efficiently. Others might have more imagination, so when something goes wrong on such an assembly line they are able to come and fix it. Others still have even more intelligence and imagination, and thus are able to design such assembly lines, or new models of cars, etc. Nevertheless, all too often people have to work at something that is way below their capabilities and their mental capacity. There were still hundreds of thousands of factory workers in the most advanced countries in the world only half a century ago, all earning a living for themselves and their families at some factory assembly lines, being unable to free themselves from the shackle of having to go to work, which many of them would hate. But for them there would be no way out of this endless cycle, no chance to advance themselves, no opportunity to even try to put their soul and their body together. There simply were no other opportunities. This situation still persists in the so-called “developing countries,” but most of the leading countries of the world have moved a step or two farther.  We can now say that we live in an affluent society that has a fairly advanced social system, which should allow us to keep searching until we find ourselves the right position, where we can advance ourselves and also advance the course of Creation. This is a living dynamic world and we are living dynamic people, we have an awareness of having a mission in this life, we should attempt to align ourselves into what our mission should be and work in this direction. This would not only help our fellow men, but we could also make it easier for ourselves to progress along the path.

 

OUR WAYS OF THINKING

We spend a great deal of time farming out our thinking. We even spend a lot of money paying other people do thinking for us. All too often we rely on other people to decide for us what is beautiful, what is ugly, or what looks pretty but might be kitsch. The fashion moguls hold many of us in bondage, literary critics tell us what we should read, theatre critics tell us which play we should or shouldn’t see, film critics decide for us which movie is worth going to, motoring journalists tell us which car we should buy, in gardening magazines we read what we should plant in our backyard… And all the time, while we listen to the TV or radio stations, we are being constantly bombarded with the commercials that in the most cunning and subtle ways are trying to feed ideas into our unconscious mind about buying this or that, mostly things that we don’t need and never will need, but which are, as we are being told, going to save us time, money, make our lives easier, etc. In actual fact we are only being compelled to consume more and more of what some people want us to consume, which means that we need to earn more and more to pay for such things, taking us farther and farther on our merry-go-round trip.

Meanwhile, we have forgotten how to say “Thank you” or “May your soul rest in peace”. We say, “How are you?” to people, and don’t even listen to what they might tell us, anticipating their answer would be, “Fine, thank you.” If their answer was “Bad” we probably wouldn’t have heard anyway. The worst thing is that we can’t even ask ourselves “How are you going?” because for such self-exploratory inner trips we are compelled to employ a suitably qualified shrink who, after taking more of our money, would listen to us and tell us what our thoughts, even those most intimate ones, really mean, and which way we should be directing them.

But to think is to live. Thought is life; it is the vital power that adds to our body of knowledge. Man is a creature of duality — there is the fleshy part and the mental part in us. If it were the corporal body that counted we would not need to worry about dieting, as we would welcome every extra kilo that we have added to it, because it would make us bigger and bigger and stronger and stronger. But, of course, it doesn’t work like this. By the time we reach the age of about twenty our body ceases to grow, and all the extra food we would give it would only show at the girth where we would be getting wider and wider. And that would be a physical retrogression. Of course that we can feed our body the right stuff, exercise it regularly, shape it well and grow and maintain physical muscles or pleasant curves that would be admirable, especially to the opposite sex. But no matter what we do, by the time we reach thirty some deterioration would be setting in, and by the time we reach about a half of our natural life span we would not be able quite so well do things with it that were easy to do a decade or two earlier. That’s when many of us would ask ourselves the question, “What should we do with the rest of our life?”

Fortunately, we are mental beings, so when we wish to become really strong and more powerful what we need to exercise right from the beginning are our minds. While admittedly in some cases there might be some decline in the very old age, for the most part of our lives our mental capacity would continue to grow, and thus we would keep on evolving as human beings. Because that is what we are — mental beings who while we think, ask others and themselves questions and fathom out the answers, the more powerful we become. Ideally, from an early age we should work on developing the habit of thinking for ourselves, but even if we have succumbed to the pleasures of the flesh early on, it is never too late to begin making an effort in this direction.

 

THE EGO AS A CARETAKER

The conscious mind, the Ego, is like a caretaker. We may imagine a building with several floors, with the caretaker living in the basement. The tenants of the house occupy the flats on the higher floors, while the owner of the house lives in the penthouse. When you come for a visit and knock at the door, the caretaker, the Ego, who is really only supposed to open the door for you, would block the entrance. He acts like the owner of the house, because he has fooled himself into believing that he really does own it. He thinks that he knows everything about the tenants in the house, but the important things escape him. He has no idea that “that rake from the third floor” is in fact an outstanding illustrator whose name is known in many countries. The house’s outstanding character to him is the football player from the fourth floor, who happens to have a drug problem, for which he is about to be nabbed, which will surprise the caretaker no end. Etc.

When you visit, you have to bluff your way past the caretaker, because you know that he will eventually learn where his place is, that he does not own the house, that he does not even rent a flat in the house, that he is only employed to do his job of care taking. The caretaker might be a bit of a nuisance, but by the same token we need him in the place. There are some societies or cults around that would try to kill the caretaker, but with the caretaker out of the way, who would open the door or change the light bulbs over the staircase? The far better way is to train the caretaker to understand his position, teach him that he is only there in a temporary position, that he is meant to help other people, and that there are things higher than that light bulb in the ceiling of the vestibule.  

One day our Caretaker accidentally runs into the tenant, who lives in the flat above. The two men get acquainted and they find out that they understand each other quite well, because they are very much alike. Except that the man from the first floor lives in the much better environment, as the man from the basement flat finds out when he is invited upstairs. There are good-looking carpets, attractive wall hangings and lovely oak furniture, all to the poorer man’s admiration.

“I would like to live like this,” says the Caretaker.

“You can. Soon I’ll be vacating this flat and I will be moving to another place, so this can be yours. Can you afford the rent?”

“The rent. You pay a rent here?”

The Caretaker then talks to other tenants and learns that the landlord, who lives in the penthouse, collects the rent from all the tenants, except himself. He gets his lodgings free, in exchange for doing a little groundwork, etc. For this he has thus far been allowed to live in the non-renovated basement flat. However, the attraction of living in a luxurious apartment proves too strong, and the Caretaker eventually moves upstairs, where he sets himself up nicely, pays his rent and contributes towards the maintenance of the whole building. He organises his life in a better way, and he learns to be more responsible towards other people and to his own affairs. The move marks the beginning of his new prosperity.

Your personality is like the basement flat dweller, basically good, but still full of egotistic thoughts and interests. It can only develop further by meeting with and conversing with its higher principles, and by gaining the directions for its future journey. Like the caretaker who pretends to be the landlord, our Ego can play many similar tricks on us. It might for instance urge us to seek phenomena, things that dazzle and excite us. Psychism and spirituality are two different things, yet they are often confused, especially by those who are new to spiritual path. When you are on the path you do get certain experiences that previously avoided you. You might be able to predict what would happen, in some cases. The telephone might ring, and as you are going to pick up the receiver you already know not only who it is going to be, but also what they are going to tell us. These occurrences are only our little rewards, little flushes of illumination, they are here to show us that we are successful on the path; they are meant to encourage us in our persistence. It certainly does not mean that we should immediately drop everything, give up our daytime job, put up a shingle and from now on begin to advertise ourselves as “Eleanor, the Clairvoyant” in the local newspaper. What could also happen to you is that for a time you begin to dream a lot more often; at the same time the content of your dreams might change completely. It might occur to you that these abilities that you have newly acquired may not be of a lasting nature, because they tend to come and go. However, if you stop having such experiences for some time this is not a reason for concern either; it usually doesn’t mean that you have stopped advancing along the path. It might be so because we are about to move a notch higher and the synchronistic events that would often follow such a step are still in process of incubation. At all times however we should remain aware that our biggest downfall would be becoming proud and arrogant because of a few flashes of illumination.
