27. THE STORY OF ABRAHAM & SARAH

Many mysterious meanings are thus hidden underneath the surface of the story of Abraham. We are told that his original name was Abram Aleph, Beth, Resh, Mem final:

(Don’t forget that Hebrew is read from right to left.) Divided, this name can be read as Ab (father) and Ram (people, nations), together “the Father of Nations”. Abram was called the Father of Nations because out of his seed came not only the Hebrews but also the Ishmaelites (later the Muslims) and even the Christians.

Abram’s wife’s original name was Sarai  Shin, Resh, Yod:

This means My Princess. In those days, man’s wife was his helper. Thus far the couple had no children. When the angel of God visited Sarai, she was told that she would become a mother. The ages of these two people at the time are given in the Bible as 100 years for Abram and 90 years for Sarai. These of course sound ridiculous, and even more so do the ages of some of the patriarch, many of which run into several hundreds, with Methuselah being the ultimate record holder, dying at 969 years of age. We must of course understand that all these numbers are symbolical, as is much in the Bible. In any case, Sarai was not concerned with her own age, but rather with her husband Abram’s being too old to be a father, and she said so to the messenger. The angel, however, did not tell Abram exactly what the words of his wife were; instead he told him that she said she was too old, because he did not want to hurt Abram’s feelings.  This is the beginning of lies. In such terms, as the interpreters of the Bible insist, we are told that when we have a situation whereby there is a potential of hurting the feeling of somebody or for creating a catastrophe in a family, it is better to say a small lie and thus save the situation.

At this point in the story something happens that in the Bible denotes a hidden meaning, when God says to Abram:

Neither shall thy name any more be called Abram, but thy name shall be Abraham; for a father of many nations have I made thee.  (Gen 17:5)

        A little farther on:

And God said unto Abraham: ‘As for Sarai thy wife, thou shalt not call her name Sarai, but Sarah shall her name be. (Gen 17:15)

What happened was that God removed the letter Yod (numerical value 10) from the name of Sarai, because from then on, she was not to be a mere slave of her husband. In place of the Yod she was given the letter He (numerical value 5), changing her name into Sarah. The remaining 5 from the original 10 of the letter Yod, in the form of another He, was given to Abram, making his name Abraham. With the He in her name, Sarah was no longer the princess of Abram, she became the Mother of Nations. Yod is a masculine number, He, on the other hand, is feminine. With Yod in both their names, Abram and Sarai were unable to have any children, because of the excessive masculinity. By gaining a certain amount of femininity, both of them were finally able to have a child, Isaac.

Abraham

Sarah

The change of name was accomplished by splitting the Yod into halves, or the two He; when her name was Sarai, she was barren, now she was endowed with the ability to conceive a child. We can thus view the presence of the letter He in Sarah’s name as an increase of feminine hormones.

ISHMAEL

Before Abram and Sarai had their names changed and before they were able to have a child, Sarai sent to her husband her Egyptian maidservant Hagar, because she was worried about being infertile. Hagar conceived a child off Abram, the boy’s name was Ishmael (there probably were more children that came out of this relationship, while Ishmael’s name is the only one mentioned).

Jean Baptiste Camille Corot: Hagar

There are several characters in the Bible, who are not spiritually advanced but rather somewhat “rough” in a character and who are usually warriors and hunters; Ishmael is one of them (others are Nimrod, Essau, etc). This is in contrast to the main lineage of patriarchs that also begins with Abraham.

But unto the sons of the concubines, which Abraham had, Abraham gave gifts, and sent them away from Isaac his son, while he yet lived, eastward, unto the east country. (Gen 25:6)

When the latter became the father of Isaac, he did not want his son to grow up too close to Ishmael and Hagar. He therefore told them to leave his family and go east. However, before they left, they received a gift. There have been a number of guesses as to the nature of this gift, but the gift was most likely knowledge of magic or as we might also say, knowledge of the Secret Doctrine.

(Gustav Doré: Abraham Sends Hagar and Ishmael Away – right)

When east is mentioned in the Bible, it generally refers to India. Naturally, the following is only hypothetical, but it is propped by some striking similarities that occur in the words and names in the Hindu, Sanskrit and Hebrew languages.

Let’s assume that the descendants of Abraham, Ishmael perhaps with several siblings, with their gifts went to India, where they were referred to (and still are) as the Brahmins, because they were the sons of Abraham. There can be little doubt that the words Abraham and Brahman have the common root. Interestingly, the letter “A” that is missing in the latter is the very letter Aleph, which in Hebrew denotes the unity and oneness of God. Indeed, while the Brahmins seemed to have always propagated a kind of monotheism, their followers have been highly prone to falling into idolatry, as if the binding force of Aleph was missing... There are many other words in the Hindu and Sanskrit languages that might have their origin in Hebrew, or perhaps vice-versa. For instance the name of the god Shiva, as the female principle, could easily have its root in Chevah (Eve), which means “giver of life.” The fact that monotheistic faith took hold in India is evidenced by the writings of that period.

The reason why Abraham gave the sons of Hagar (whose other name is Kethura) the gift of spiritual insights was because he did not want them to fall prey to the worship of idols. The word Brahman denotes “meeting the Divine”. The Indians use the word Prana to describe the force, the flow of vital energy that comes down to us through the medium of Chesed and Tiferet. The word Veda is related to the word Yeda, which is knowledge in Hebrew; it also has the same meaning in some of the Slavic languages. The word for expressing spiritual impurity in Hindu is Tamas, while in Hebrew it is Tameh.

If we look closely, we will find in these two languages, Hebrew and Sanskrit, many more words that must have had the same origin, There are also parallels in the teachings of the Kabbalah and those of the esoteric Hinduism and Buddhism. To someone who knows the texts of the Talmud, the reading of the Mahabharata or the Upanishads offers many correspondences, which however seem to be somewhat distorted, as if there did not exist the continuity and the purity that the Talmud was able to retain, as it was passed on under a more favourable conditions, with the capacity for constant control.

CHANGES OF NAMES IN THE BIBLE

Another significant change of a name, also involving the letter Yod, occurs in the case of Hosheia:

Hosheia was a very humble man; he was a disciple of Moshe, (Moses). Moshe made known to all the Israelites his appreciation of Hosheia, and he raised his status by adding the Yod before his name. Hosheia, in Hebrew, means “he saved”. Moshe send his disciple on a mission to Jerusalem and changed his name to Yehosheia (Joshua). This also changed the meaning into “he will save”.  When they arrived at the threshold of the land of Canaan, God said to the Hebrews: “Go in and put all the people to the sword”. These people were said to have practiced all sorts of abominations, they had no faith, they worshipped idols, sacrificed their first born children, forced their wives to prostitution, in other words, they were depraved in a similar or even in the more severe way then the people of the Flood. The Jewish people were afraid that the people of Canaan would be too strong to defeat and begun to talk about first sending an envoy into the land. When Moshe heard about this, he was annoyed, and when he conveyed it to God, God was even more annoyed. He told Moshe ( that he would be with his people all the way, so why would they not trust him? Eventually, Moshe send Yehosheia, Caleb and some others into the land of Canaan, but they were too timid to fight and when they returned, many of them said lies, such as that it was occupied by giants who were too strong to fight against, etc.

The teaching of the Talmud and of the Kabbalists on this part of the Bible is that if we are too reluctant to do anything, the more we talk ourselves into being weak and cowardly, the more we are going to see things that do not exist, the more we will lie to ourselves. Because of their acceptance of such tales and because of their reluctance to fight against the people of Canaan, the Hebrews were sent back into the wilderness for forty years. This meant that they were to remain in the exile until the last of the generation that proved themselves to be so cowardly would die. By having to put up with the rigours of travelling and of living in the wilderness, the new generation was expected to become strong and courageous; this is what in fact happened. Yehosheia or Joshua was at the head of the people who finally went into the land of Canaan and attacked, in his case the masculinity of the added letter Yod in his name enabled him to successfully complete the task.

THE LETTER SHIN

The letter Shin is equivalent to 300. This letter represents Divine power. There are two names of God, which are symbolised by the letter Shin. The first one is Shadai, Shin, Daleth, Yod,

which means the all sufficient, complete, unlimited. The Almighty. The second one is Shalom, Shin, Lamed, Vav, Mem final,

which  means peace, completion.

All objects are differentiated; all have their properties, their peculiarities. It is written in the book of Genesis that God created everything “after its own kind”. The Eternal also established the boundaries of all the forces, He also established demur of limits within which everyone is to live. The second syllable of the word Shadai, Dai, means enough, and through it the heavens and the earth were brought to a halt. Without it, everything would have continued to expand and develop, blind forces, like the all-consuming fire with the hissing sound of shhhhh, would have been unleashed. While the word Shadai is fixed law, the word Shalom is peace and perfection. Man must emulate the Creator, to thrive spiritually he must harmonise diverse elements of nature. The rain refracts the light into three primary colours, red, yellow and blue, which blend in different degrees to form all the colours of the rainbow. The rainbow is the symbol of the bond between God and his creatures, it is a reminder of the covenant between God and Noah after the Flood, when God promised that he will never again destroy the whole human race.

The question that is frequently asked in our times is: can man destroy the world? The answer to it is that only God is capable of such thing, if man were able to do it, it would have happened a long time ago. Nevertheless, humanity is probably quite capable of destroying itself, though all the wars in the past never caused a substantial decrease in population, in fact, the exact opposite had happened and the population grew steadily throughout the past millennia. This might sound callous, but wars seem to have a similar effect as pruning of the trees in forests does; it causes regeneration.

The letter Shin has three flames, though according to the Jewish tradition there are really four flames; this is one of its greatest mysteries. It alludes to the ways of the Creator, which are concealed and incapable of perception by the limited human mind.

THE HEBREW LANGUAGE

The Kabbalah is a rather complex science, applied natural and beyond the natural, it cannot be exposed according to our normal and current mental structure. It has a wide range of definitions, wisdom from above, sacred science of letters and numbers, mystique of language and experience of being, of life. The word “Kabbalah” means receiving or welcoming, it implies a favour or a joy on the part of the one who passes on the knowledge; it also implies worthiness and preparedness on the part of the recipient. It is also called the secret wisdom.

Where does this wisdom come from? I have said at the beginning that the history of the Kabbalah cannot possibly be reliably traced, but that according to tradition it is as old as humanity itself. The oldest written documents that we have come mainly from medieval Spain, and therefore they are not older than about one thousand years, but much of what has been written since has almost certainly been passed on as oral tradition a long time before.
